Pyramid Brewing Thunderhead IPA

Pyramid Brewing Thunderhead IPA

Originally based in Seattle, Pyramid Brewing’s Thunderhead IPA comes in at a lofty 6.7% abv. An aggressive pour yielded a great off white head with the beer a mouthwatering clear golden honey colour. I found the nose to be rather complex with hints of pine and citrus yet definitely sweet. The mouthfeel had some weight to it, with a hint of lemon bitterness. The finish was crisp with a mild hoppy bitterness on the palate.

Rating: 4/5 – a nicely balanced IPA that would be a great introduction to this particular style, before moving up the scale to the typical hoppy bitter Pacific Northwest IPA. A great beer to pair with a light, yellow Thai curry.

Erdinger Dunkel

Erdinger Dunkel

Erdinger Dunkel is a dark wheat based beer that is bottle conditioned. At 5.3% abv this savory beer has a lovely dark coffee coloration with a rich tan head. The nose is malty with coffee and spice undertones. I found the mouthfeel to be thin with a pleasant dark roast malt flavor. The finish was dry with a touch of hop bitterness.

Rating: 3/5 – a flavorful dark wheat ale that would pair well with a herbed rack of lamb and roasted vegetable.

Planked Tandoori Salmon – Chef Karen Barnaby

During our many years at the BC Home & Garden Show we have had the honour of working with some of the best Chef’s in Vancouver as they created some sumptuous meals on a bbq grill. This recipe is from Chef Karen Barnaby.

Suggested Beer Pairing: Pale Ale, India Pale Ale

Comments: The spices of the Tandoori Salmon will match well hoppy (or spicy) stronger bitter beers. The beer will cut through the fat of the fish and the creamy sauce to renew the palate.

Makes 4 servings

  • 1/2 cup lemon juice
  • 2 tsp. minced garlic
  • 2 tsp. finely chopped ginger
  • 4 6-oz. salmon filets
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
  • 2 tsp. minced garlic
  • 2 tsp. finely chopped ginger
  • 1 Tbsp. lemon juice
  • 1/4 tsp. ground turmeric
  • 1 tsp. hot, smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp. garam masala
  • 1/2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
  • Lime wedges

Whisk together the lemon juice, garlic and ginger. Place the salmon in a shallow baking dish and cover with the marinade. Refrigerate for 15 minutes. Drain and pat dry.

Mix together remaining ingredients. Place salmon back in the baking dish and cover with the marinade. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 15-30 minutes.

Soak cedar plank in water overnight. Heat the BBQ to high and place the plank on the barbecue until it smokes. Transfer the filets to the plank skin side down. Cover and cook for 15-20 minutes until the salmon is done. Serve with the lime wedges.

Efes Dark

Efes Dark

Brewed by Anadolu Efes Brewing in Turkey, the Efes Dark is a delicious example of a dark lager. At 6.1% abv this beer tricks the palate into expecting something much different. In the glass, we see a clear, rich dark cola colour with a quickly receding tan head. The nose is distinctly sweet with sumptuous molasses brown sugar aromas. The mouthfeel is light and crisp with definitive dark malts and sweet molasses flavors. The finish is crisp with a slight hop character.

Rating: 4.5/5 – this is one of my favorite styles, crisp clean finish with rich dark beer flavors. Efes Dark would pair nicely with meaty stews and tangy tomato based pasta sauces.

Persephone Brewing Golden Ale

Persephone Brewing Golden Ale

Retailing at BCLDB for $11.95 for a six pack

The Persephone Golden Ale comes in a 355ml can. When poured, the liquid is a clear rich honey colour with average levels of carbonation. The slightly off white head disappeared to the edges of the glass rather quickly. The nose had hints of herbs from the hops and a touch of floral notes. The mouthfeel was fairly light with a savory hoppy bitterness the end note that lingered subtly on the tongue

Rating: 3/5 – an enticing ale that would pair well with some poached white fish with citrus slices.
